PHILIPPINE ECONOMY POST A MODEST 4.9 PERCENT GDP GROWTH

Underspending by the government and the slowdown in global trade constricted the economy to a lower growth in the now 2000-based GDP of 4.9 percent in the first quarter from the election stimulated 8.4 percent last year. The industry driven growth benefited from the sustained growth of Manufacturing supported by Other Services, Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities, and the recovery of Agriculture but tempered by the lackluster trading activities and the second consecutive quarter of decline in Public Administration and Defense and Compulsory Social Security which used to be referred to as Government Services....

Approved FDI plunges by 52.8 percent
in Q1 2011

Total foreign direct investments (FDI) approved in the first quarter of 2011 by the four major investment promotion agencies amounted to PhP 22.0 billion, 52.8 percent lower than the FDI approved in Q1 2010. Except for the Board of Investments, the other IPAs namely Clark Development Corporation (CDC), Philippine Economic Zone Authority, and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) suffered setbacks in FDI applications with SBMA and CDC registering the highest declines of 93.7 and 92.0 percent, respectively....

NSCB Conducts Dissemination Forum on the Revised/Rebased

The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) will conduct a Dissemination Forum on the Revised/Rebased National Accounts of the Philippines (NAP) on May 12, 2011 at 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Crowne Plaza Galleria, Ortigas Avenue corner ADB Avenue. During the forum, the NSCB will officially release the revised/rebased (2000=100) NAP estimates for 1998-2010, balanced in a supply and use framework, as well as the new features/recommendations of the 1993 and 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA)....

Total Gross Revenue Index of Industries Up by 12.7 percent in Q4 2010

Total Gross Revenue Index of industries went up by 12.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010, from a level of 8.0 percent growth in the previous year. Real Estate registered the highest growth at 24.1 percent due to increased revenues from real estate projects, renting and leasing operations. This was followed by Trade, which grew by 13.9 percent and Finance, up by 12.7 percent....

Leading Economic Indicator

The composite leading economic indicator (LEI) rose for the fifth consecutive quarter but the upswing in the fourth quarter of 2010 continued the slowdown that started in the third quarter. The fourth quarter 2010 LEI increased to 0.026 from a revised 0.022 in the third quarter of 2010, the slimmest rise in the composite LEI since the fourth quarter of 2009 when the index started to shift direction after five quarters of a downward streak....
